A Study on Market for Cellular Phones in India

This study forms a part of the project ‘Facilitating Partnerships for Environmentally Sound Management of E-Waste in India’ sponsored by Secretariat of Basel Convention and being executed by Development Alternatives with assistance from VisionRI Connexion Services Private Limited, New Delhi. This study covers various aspects of the E-waste generated as discarded cellular telephones (E-Waste-CT) and its management in India. The terms of reference for the study includes reviewing the current status and future growth projections of market for cellular telephones in India; current methods of managing the end of life cellular telephones and associated environmental impacts through literature review, photographic evidences where possible and structured discussions with representative stakeholder groups in Delhi, i.e. consumers, petty mobile repair shopkeepers, junk dealers, recycling facilities and manufacturers/importers; estimating the average lifetime of cellular telephone handsets and quantum of e-waste generated; identifying stakeholders their roles and possible modes of engagement to explore practical solutions for improved management of e-waste from cellular telephones and providing inputs on economics of initiating a take-back system for end of life cellular telephones by handset manufacturers.
