non-point source pollutant loadings, water distribution network information system;
locating solid wastes landfill sites, risk assessment due to water quality, designing
solid wastes collection systems in urban areas, urban storm water management and assessing
regional biodiversity and its temporal changes.

Prof. N.N. Som

Born in 1941,
Prof. Nitin Som graduated in Civil Engineering from Jadavpur University in 1961 and
obtained his Ph.D. from University of London in 1968. He did pioneering work in
stress-path method of settlement analysis which marked an important contribution to the
understanding of deformation behaviour of soils in the field. He has been a faculty in the
Department of Civil Engineering Jadavpur University since 1970 and a Professor since 1979.
He has been the Head of Civil Engineering Department and also served Dean, Faculty of
Engineering & Technology of the University.
Professor Som has been intimately connected with the civil engineering profession of the
country for almost thirty five years. His expertise in soft clay engineering has earned
him wide recognition an expert on of foundations and excavations in weak soil. He was
involved with the construction of Calcutta Metro, as their prime geotechnical consultant.
He has also served as geotechnical consultant to Delhi Metro Rail Project and a number of
highway projects in India. His areas of research are underground construction in soft
ground soil, structure interaction in weak soil, ground improvement, environmental
geotechnique, geotextile applications etc. He has authored more than hundred technical
papers in national and international journals and conferences. Prof Som served with
distinction a two-year term as the President Indian Geotechnical Society in 1999-2000. He
also delivered the IGS Annual lecture in 1998 and was conferred the IGS-Kuckelmann award
in 2002. Prof Som is a Life Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), the Indian
Geotechnical Society and a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.
